To be honest I never was very much into Mayhem, but
gave Chimera a try at the record shop and liked it immediately. Does
that mean they made a very accessible album? Well, I don't think so.
Pure evil and destruction is what these Norwegians spread over us. It's
filled with real aggressive and complex black metal, but no strange
experiments this time. Dark Night of the Soul has a very complex
structure, which makes it different and even strange at times. Slaughter
of Dreams also has strange, almost absurd, riffs. Unfortunately the
riffs are repeated a bit too much, making it the lesser (no, not worse!)
song.
Hellhammer shows himself to be a much better then average drummer, with
great double bass drumming. In the booklet is the layout of the drum kit
he used during recording. It has no less then 3 (!) bass-drums, giving
him 2 drumming positions. The drums are so great, I sometimes even wish
they had mixed the drum a little louder.
Highlight songs:
"Impious Devious Leper Lord" has a pretty cool bass intro, which comes
back in the song every now and then.
Title song "Chimera" is my favorite! It's a dark song that starts
mid-tempo with even clean vocals.
Is it a masterpiece, worthy of Mayhem? Yes, it is! The only backside of
the album is the quality of the booklet that is a sheer disappointment.
They've used a strange kind of paper that makes the lyrics almost, and
totally, in the case of Chimera, impossible to read without bionic eyes.
