Insomnium is a quartet that comes from Joensuu - Finland. After two demo's, in April 2002 their debut album "In the Halls of Awaiting" was released. At first sight, it's clear that they come from Finland: the album cover shows a lake with some trees and is beautiful in all it's simplicity. Their music also shows clearly where the band is from. It is best described as melodic Death Metal in a way they can only make it in Scandinavia. This album is kind of strange: the music isn't anything we haven't heard before, but they play it in a way that can be listened to over and over again! Very nice melodies, heavy guitar riffs and some beautiful moments of rest.

Unlike a lot of Scandinavian bands, they don't use keyboards often. It is there sometimes, but the music is guitar-driven and not keyboard-driven. After listening to the album a feeling of "it was very nice" is all that remains. The album doesn't have real extreme heights, nor does it have real lows. Overall it's very good music that sounds promising for the future of this band. To me it sounds like a band with good potential and samples for the new album on their website are also sound very promising.

I said the album doesn't have real heights, but still there are some songs that need that little extra attention:

- Shades of Deep Green: a mid-tempo song which starts with cool, distorted guitar. At times it gives a melancholic almost sad feeling. A walk through the Finnish forests, pity you can't smell the woods after a fresh rain shower when listening. Really that's the only thing missing here! Hard to sit still when listening to this!

- In the Halls of Awaiting:  It takes no less then 10:55 minutes and gives pure emotion! The start is pretty heavy, but halfway through, it becomes a beautiful emotional song, mostly because of the wonderful keyboards. An ideal song listen to while sitting by a Finnish lake, to suffer in anger and weep. My favorite!

A nice journey through the dark Finnish woods.
